Route surveys are the first thing clients try to remove from a project cargo quote. They are a visible cost attached to something that has not happened yet, which makes them feel optional in a way that the transport itself does not.
What a survey is checking
A physical survey walks the entire route between discharge point and final position, confirming a specific list of constraints against the actual dimensions and weight of the load.
- Bridge and culvert load ratings along every section
- Overhead clearance including cables, gantries and signage
- Turning radii at every junction the vehicle must negotiate
- Gradient and camber where a high centre of gravity matters
- Ground bearing capacity at the lift and set-down positions
Any one of these can stop a movement completely. Not delay it — stop it, with the cargo loaded, the crane booked and a site crew standing by.

The asymmetry
A survey costs a defined amount, known in advance. A failed movement costs demobilisation, re-planning, storage, a second permit cycle, crane standby and a construction programme that has slipped. The two numbers are not in the same range.
The route survey costs a fraction of the bridge you discover the hard way.
When to commission it
As early as the equipment is specified — ideally before the purchase order is placed. Dimensions and lift points are far cheaper to influence at design stage than to engineer around after fabrication, and permit lead times run to several weeks in most jurisdictions we operate in.
Every project movement we have seen go badly wrong shared the same feature: the route was assessed after the equipment was built, not before.
